Magic and Comedy Shows

The stalwart of afternoon comedy magic is Mac King, whose family friendly show at Harrah's features amazing close-up magic and plenty of laughs at reasonable ticket prices. Some audience members are invited to participate in the show. King's counterpart, Nathan Burton, ups the ante by escaping from a massive microwave and making a life-sized Barbie come to life at Planet Hollywood. His is another kid-friendly show featuring several assistants to aid in the magic. What's the difference between men and women? In "Defending the Caveman" at Harrah's, Chris Allen draws comparisons between ancient habits and today's couples.

Musical Shows

While most of Vegas' dramatic acts takes place after dark, some musicals offer later afternoon shows. This includes "Menopause: The Musical," the ode to hot flashes and female bonding at Luxor. Or you can see what one day in 1956 might have sounded like in "Million Dollar Quarter" at Harrah's, which features a theoretical jam session at Sun Records in Memphis with impersonators of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. Prefer John, Paul, George and Ringo? Check out "BeatleShow!" at Planet Hollywood, where dead-on impressionists sing your favorite tunes.

Thrill Rides

Stratosphere is the place to be if you want to get your adrenaline pumping. The Big Shot shoots you 160 feet up the needle of the tower, while you can dangle over the edge of the 112-floor building on both X-Scream and Insanity. Or just go all out with SkyJump, which lets you bungee jump off the side of the tower. For what is arguably Vegas' best roller coaster, head over to New York-New York to ride the Big Apple Coaster, which winds around the outside of the property.

Freebies

Often cited as the best free thing in Las Vegas, the Bellagio fountains begin swaying and shooting several stories in the air in time with music beginning in the early afternoon. The shows take place every 30 minutes during the day, with a variety of music genres. Circus Circus' performers take to the trapeze in the midway above the casino floor regularly during the day. Adults can catch the show from the casino, while families should watch from the upper level. Both Bellagio and Wynn offer conservatories, with floral displays that change regularly.
